Core Principles of Good Public Service
Every public body should aim to:
- Put the public interest first.
- Follow the law.
- Spend public money responsibly.
- Be open and transparent.
- Be accountable for decisions.
- Treat everyone fairly and without discrimination.
- Listen to complaints and learn from mistakes.
- Publish performance, spending and decision-making information where required.
- Protect personal information while supporting transparency obligations.
- Act with integrity, honesty and impartiality.
This framework reflects how public administration and democratic accountability are intended to operate in the UK. In practice, specific responsibilities vary between local authorities, central government departments, devolved governments, regulators, and individual public bodies.
